Ragnhildur “Ragga” Jónsdóttir is an elf whisperer. Iceland’s huldufólk (elves, trolls, sprites) have a human champion in Ragga, who is now using her status to try and stop a highway across a lava field that is home to these creatures in this respectful and fascinating documentary.
For here is where myth and reality collide: Jónsdóttir is dead serious about the highway’s impact on this beautiful landscape, including the destruction of an elven chapel, a moss-covered boulder that is also the prize of human environmentalists working with Ragga. Director Sara Dosa’s compassionate film follows Jónsdóttir, who is part of a long tradition of Viking spiritualists who speak to Iceland’s great mythologies, which are tied indelibly to its environment. Director Biography
Sara Dosa is the director of The Last Season (2014) and an episode of the Netflix music docu-series Remastered, Tricky Dick and the Man in Black (2018), as well as The Seer and the Unseen (2019). She is a graduate of Wesleyan University and holds a joint masters in anthropology and international development economics from the London School of Economics.
