Wiebke (Nina Hoss) is a single mother raising Nicolina, her adopted daughter, in the German countryside. As a family, the pair decides to adopt another girl, five-year-old Raya, from Bulgaria. But Raya is discovered to have an attachment disorder, and her behavior goes from strange to violent.

A horse trainer for the police, Wiebke is living an idyllic life. With her daughter Nicolina, she is proudly single, managing her life with enough ease to make her and her daughter believe that their love should be shared. And so, it’s off to another orphanage and Raya is adopted. Wiebke is strong and knows that adopted children have a tough time of it, but the new girl’s behavior is making everyone tense: first, breaking dishes, then torturing animals, and then… Weibke begins to wonder if this isn’t psychological but supernatural. And is the child disturbed, or is she herself the one with problems? Pelican Blood is at once a frightening genre film and beautiful art house picture on par with Rosemary’s Baby.
