THE KID (1921)
Charlie Chaplin was already an international star when he decided to break out of the short-film format and make his first full-length feature. The huge success of Chaplin’s first feature opened the doors for Keaton, Lloyd and others to move beyond short comedies. In The Kid, Chaplin Stars as his lovable Tramp character, this time raising an orphan (played by a young Jackie Coogan) he has rescued from the streets. Chaplin and Coogan make a marvelous pair in this marriage of sentiment and slapstick, a film that is, as its opening title card states, “a picture with a smile—and perhaps, a tear.” (USA, 1921, 68 min., NR, B&W | dir. Ben Model is one of America’s leading silent film accompanists, and has been playing piano and organ for silent films at the New York MoMA since 1984 and the CAC since 2006. Since March 16th, 2020, Ben has been hosting a weekly live-streamed silent film show from his living room, “The Silent Comedy Watch Party.”
