Join us for an in-depth examination and audience
Q&A on the life and work of screen legend Barbara Stanwyck, with a focus on one of her most iconic early
roles in the 1931 pre-code mystery, Night Nurse.
Night Nurse is a human
document – the story of the woman who must do men’s bidding in the long watches
of the night. After the first hundred shocks, nothing gets under her
skin. She learns how to take them or to laugh them off, until her next
assignment, where she finds herself in a life and death battle, against booze,
bootleggers, parties and jazz, and… a mother.
Born on July 16, 1907,
in Brooklyn, Barbara Stanwyck appeared in more than 80 films, portraying a
variety of strong-willed women. Her appearances include the film noir
classic Double Indemnity, in which she defined the femme fatale
character. Night Nurse was the first of a five picture
collaboration between Barbara Stanwyck and director William Wellman that helped cement her place among Hollywood
stardom.
Victoria Wilson is a film historian, author, publishing executive, and expert
on Barbara Stanwyck’s career. She is the author of The Life of Barbara
Stanwyck: Steel-True 1907-1940 and is currently working on a second
volume that will cover the latter half of Stanwyck’s life.
Foster Hirsch is a professor of film at Brooklyn College and the author of
sixteen books on film and theater, including The Dark Side of the
Screen: Film Noir, Otto Preminger, A Method to Their
Madness: The History of the Actors Studio, and Kurt Weill on Stage:
From Berlin to Broadway. He regularly hosts the Cinema Arts Centre program,
Film Noir Classics.
