In 1948, the Paramount Case marked the beginning of the end of Classical Hollywood. As studios wrestled with ways in which to (re)engage audiences, there were cultural, economic, technological, and industrial forces at play that irrevocably shaped the kinds of stories that got told and what audiences wanted to see. Within this cultural maelstrom, what can we understand today as "New Hollywood" filmmaking emerged. This class will consider the cultural, industrial, and economic influences that intensified both the formal and narrative features of Hollywood films.
