from the play by Leonid Andreyev and the debut American feature for acclaimed
Swedish director Victor Sjöstrom, Lon Chaney stars as brilliant inventor
Paul Beaumont who becomes tormented by the theft of his research by a rival
scientist. He moves forward with his life hiding behind the mask of a clown and
engages in a comedic show of being slapped and battered around by other clowns
on stage when he attempts to speak, much to the delight of circus audiences. The
clown now known as “HE” looks to find redemption as he falls in love with another
performer (Norma Shearer) and lies
in wait for the opportunity to redeem his personal and professional
