The most important black filmmaker in the first half of the 20th century was Oscar Micheaux, who directed over 40 films in a career spanning 30 years in both the silent and sound eras. The incendiary drama Within Our Gates was Micheaux’s second feature film and is the earliest surviving feature film directed by an African American. Evelyn Preer stars as Sylvia Landry, a young Chicago woman who endeavors to raise money to save a school for black children in the rural south. Micheaux’s story was created largely in response to D.W. Griffith’s highly prejudicial The Birth of a Nation, providing a much needed Black perspective to the controversial and widely seen content. Within Our Gates was thought to be a lost movie until a single print was discovered in Spain (under the title La Negra) in the late 1970s. (USA, 1920, 79 min, NR | Dir: Oscar Micheaux)
