Rod Serling & The Twilight Zone:
The Black Experience
During the first season of The
Twilight Zone, it’s creator Rod
Serling wrote an episode, “The Big Tall Wish”, about a washed up boxer (Ivan Dixon) who breaks his knuckles the
night before a comeback fight, and the young boy who makes “The Biggest,
tallest wish” that something magical will happen. This episode, which aired
during April of 1960, was one of the earliest Twilight Zone episodes to feature Black actors in lead roles. The
episode also features an early, poignant score by Jerry Goldsmith. New York State Librarian and Film Historian Philip Harwood will discuss this
episode, as well as other Serling programs dealing with the Black Experience
(including the Serling original unaired script, Noon On Doomsday.)
This episode, “The Big Tall Wish” from the first season of The Twilight Zone, is available on
Netflix. Many public libraries also have all seasons of The Twilight Zone. You can watch the episode on your own time and then,
we will all meet on March 15th, to discuss the episode, and other Serling
pertinent projects.
