Mabel Normand was one of the comedy greats of early film. She starred in at least one hundred and sixty-seven film shorts and twenty-three full-length features.  Normand was the only comedian to work with Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, Mack Sennett, D.W. Griffith, Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Hal Roach, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, and many more. By 1912 Normand was writing her own films, and by 1914 she was directing her films. That her contributions to early film history are not better known is attributable in part to her being entangled in the Hollywood scandals of the 1920s, and to our reliance on the self-interested memoirs of her better-known colleagues (especially Sennett and Chaplin) following her premature death at age thirty-eight.

THE EXTRA GIRL is one of Mabel’s funniest feature films. In this 1923 comedy, she stars as Sue Graham, a small-town lass who escapes her romantic entanglements by heading for the green pastures of Hollywood. Sue quickly discovers that the dream factory is just a factory like any other, as she is assigned to duty in the wardrobe department. But through pluck and ambition, she manages to overcome every setback, including one hair-raising sequence in which she accidentally unleashes a man-eating lion on the studio backlot.

Join us for a rare online screening of this delightful comic classic featuring one of the great superstars of early cinema. (USA, 1923, 68 min, NR | Dir: F. Richard Jones)
