In honor of and in a deep bow to the late Al Milgrom, MSP Film Society and MSPIFF founder and inspiration, we have renamed the International Auteur Tribute, the Milgrom Tribute.
The Milgrom Tribute showcases artists whose talents as writer/director/producer put a distinctive stamp on every one of their films, who have been instrumental in promoting a higher regard for the art of cinema, and who have consistently made and continue to make critical waves at a global level.
The 2021 inaugural Milgrom Tribute, in the spirit of our Women & Film Initiative, recognizes the eminent, politically-minded, multi-award winning Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Ms. Holland, known as a trailblazing artist whose storytelling often elevates outsider perspectives and whose work as an auteur in the cinematic world is widely recognized as deeply personal and historically significant, was a personal favorite of Al’s.
MSPIFF40 will host Ms. Holland in a Live Zoom Dialogue on Sunday May 16 at 2pm CT, and will present Ms. Holland’s newest film, Charlatan, which won five 2021 Czech Lion Awards, including ‘Best Film,’ and was Czech entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Academy Awards. MSPIFF40 will also present special screenings of Ms. Holland’s most widely renowned film, Europa Europa, nominated for an Oscar in 1990, as well as the award-winning Mr. Jones.
Agnieszka Holland Biography
Agnieszka Holland was born in 1948 in Warsaw, Poland. After graduating from FAMU in Prague, she returned to Poland and began her film career working with Krzysztof Zanussi, joining the group of promising young Polish directors, “the filmmakers of moral unrest,” associated with her mentor, the acclaimed Polish filmmaker, Andrzej Wajda. One of her early feature films, Provincial Actors (1978), was a flagship pictures of the "cinema of moral disquiet" and the winner of the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980.
Holland’s many feature films, in her role as director and director/screenwriter, have earned a great deal of critical acclaim and wide-spread honor from festivals across the world, including the Berlinale, Telluride, Toronto and Cannes, winning numerous Academy Award nominations and Golden Globe awards. These include Charlatan, Angry Harvest, Europa, Europa, The Secret Garden, Spoor, Washington Square, and Mr. Jones to name a few. Holland has also worked extensively in television directing many episodes of lauded award-winning series including The Wire, Treme, Burning Bush and 1983.
Holland’s body of work frequently reflects her Jewish and Catholic roots, dealing with issues of faith and mysticism. She often portrays people looking for a way out, striving for self-fulfillment, pursuing happiness and failing or being forced to settle for a dubious compromise, posing the question of how human beings morally deal with critical situations.
David D'Arcy Biography
David D’Arcy is a veteran film critic, journalist and broadcaster. He is a correspondent for The Art Newspaper, the most extensive source of information and opinion on the art world. A former critic for Screen International, he has been on film festival juries around the world and is frequently heard on public radio and the BBC. He has interviewed everyone from Mike Leigh to Spike Lee. He is also the co-screenwriter and co-producer of Portrait of Wally (2012), a feature documentary about a painting by Egon Schiele which was looted by Nazis from a Jewish art dealer in Vienna in 1939 and surfaced at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
