“LATE CINEMA NOVO”
(Presented by the Miami Beach Film Society)
Continuing the Brazilian neorealist-like naturalism of the 1960s movement Cinema Novo, Héctor Babenco’s international breakout film is an unflinching criticism of the urban decay caused by the political dictatorship of the time. Ten-year-old Fernando Ramos da Silva plays the title role in one of the century’s most heartbreaking performances, as a struggling street kid who forms a “family” despite all odds against him.
