Within Rio de Janeiro’s corridors of power in the not-so-distant future, attorney Antônio Gama (Alfred Enoch, How to Get Away with Murder), makes a passionate case for reparations towards Brazil’s disproportionately impoverished Black population—the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. Alongside his wife Capitu (Taís Araujo) and their cheeky, high-spirited roommate André (musician Seu Jorge), the trio scoff when their government initiates Executive Order 1888, offering the nation’s ‘high melanin’ citizens a one-way ticket to the African country of their choice. But soon the government switches to a policy of forced deportation, sending violent, heavily armed soldiers out into the streets as a nation declares open warfare on its black citizens in an attempt to create an all-white nation. When the trio are separated amidst the chaos, Capitu finds refuge in a hidden Afro-Bunker where Afrocentric thought flourishes as André and Antônio hide themselves inside their apartment. As water and communication are cut off and Antônio runs out of the precious insulin he needs to stay alive, a spontaneous video clip goes viral, turning the young lawyer an unexpected symbol of resistance in a land where living itself is a civil disobedience in this powerful and provocative debut feature from actor Lazaro Ramos (Madame Sata), adapted from the stage play by Aldri Anunciação.

Director Biography
Lázaro Ramos was born on November 1, 1978, in Salvador, Bahia. He is an actor, presenter, producer, director and author who, over the last 20 years has received more than 70 awards and has played almost one hundred characters in cinema, theater and television, and has published five books. He has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2009, and is well known in Latin America for his commitment to humanitarian causes. In 2017, he was elected as one of the most influential Afro-descendants in the world under the age of 40 by MIPAD (Most Influential People of African Descent) and received his award at the UN headquarters in New York.
