2021 Cine Latino Audience Choice Winner: Prayers for the Stolen by Tatiana Huezo
In a solitary town nestled in the Mexican mountains, the girls wear boyish haircuts and have hiding places underground. Ana and her two best friends take over the houses of those who have fled and dress up as women when no one is watching. In their own impenetrable universe, magic and joy abound; meanwhile, their mothers train them to flee from those who turn them into slaves or ghosts. But one day, one of the girls doesn’t make it to her hideout in time. Liberally adapted from Jennifer Clement’s eponymous 2014 novel.
En lo profundo de las exuberantes colinas verdes a las afueras de San Miguel, Jalisco, donde acechan serpientes, escorpiones y otros animales, Ana (Ana Cristina Ordóñez González), alumna de primaria, y sus mejores amigas María (Blanca Itzel Pérez) y Paula (Camila Gaal) cavan hoyos pequeños en la tierra para meterse en ellos y no ser vistas por los soldados fuertemente armados que invaden constantemente su pequeña aldea. Ana se rebela contra las reglas estrictas que su madre Rita (Mayra Batalla), de mal genio, le ha impuesto--no usar maquillaje, no hacer contacto visual con nadie y raparse la cabeza para ser menos atractivas, dado que detrás de la belleza bucólica existe una comunidad atrapada en el fuego cruzado entre los cárteles de la droga, el ejército, la explotación a gran escala de los recursos naturales, y donde es común el secuestro de jovencitas. Director Biography
Tatiana Huezo (San Salvador, 1972) studied at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico City and completed her Master's Degree in Creative Documentary at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Having made numerous short films, in 2011 she directed her first feature-length documentary, El lugar más pequeño, which received awards including the Ariel for Best Mexican Documentary and was included in the season “4+1: Contemporary Mexican Cinema” at San Sebastian. In 2016 the Forum section at Berlin Festival opened with her second feature, Tempestad, winner among others of the Ariel for Best Director, Best Documentary and a Goya nomination for Best Ibero-American Film.
