Chafing against her oppressive, overbearing father Ante, Julija, a rebellious teenage girl, embraces independence and flirts with desire over the course of a formative weekend in this sunny, sinister Croatian drama. The title references a type of Moray eel that the father and daughter spear-hunt under water near their Adriatic island home. When Ante invites old friend Cliff for a weekend to pitch a life-changing business deal, it soon becomes clear that the charismatic Cliff once had a relationship with Julija’s beautiful mother Nela. But Cliff’s roving eye is also drawn to Nela’s smoldering, nubile daughter. Inspired by debuting feature director’s Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic’s prize-winning short Into The Blue, Murina nabbed the prestigious Golden Camera at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for best first feature. The Dubrovnik-born, New York-based Kusijanovic is a graduate of the Columbia University screenwriting and directing program and boasts Martin Scorsese as a producer here.
