Otto Preminger’s haunting tale of two men’s obsession with
an ethereal woman became one of the most influential of all Film Noirs. Every
role is perfectly cast, starting with Dana
Andrews as a tough cop, Clifton Webb
as the dangerously erudite Waldo Lydecker, Vincent Price as a Southern scoundrel, and beautiful Gene Tierney as the mysterious Laura.
Its ambience is enhanced by unsettling flashbacks, voice-over, and David
Raksin’s memorable score. David Lynch’s Twin Peaks paid homage in the names of
Laura Palmer and the mynah bird Waldo. (US,
1944, 88min., English | Dir. Otto Preminger)
