Description

"The film is a Hitchcockian murder story in which the Hitchcockian elements—style as well as content—are stood on their heads in order to realize a philosophical vision that's no less sophisticated than Hitchcock's own." - Richard Brody, New Yorker

"An absolute must-see." -Ernest Hardy, LA Weekly

Winner: Best Director, Un Certain Regard, Cannes Film Festival 2013

Frank (Pierre Deladonchamps) spends his summer days hopelessly searching for companionship at a popular cruising spot on the shores of a lake in rural France. One day he meets Michel (Christophe Paou), an attractive yet darkly mysterious man, and falls blindly in love. When a death occurs, Frank and Michel become the primary suspects, but they choose to ignore the dangers and instead continue to engage in their passionate and potentially lethal relationship. While the eerie use of light, wind, and shadow—and an underlying itch that things will all go terribly wrong—suggests a vein of film noir, Guiraudie's heartbreaking film is a mixture of sex, death and impossible loneliness. No one under 18 will be admitted. In French with English subtitles.
