LET IT BE MORNING
In Israel’s official Oscar submission, Eran Kolirin, director
of The Band’s Visit, weaves a haunting portrait of modern-day
Israel. Sami, an unhappily married Jerusalem businessman, reluctantly travels
to his dusty Arab hometown with his family for a wedding. When the Israeli army
puts everyone in security lockdown without warning, the situation descends into
chaos, and Sami is forced to ruefully reassess his place in Israeli society.
Kolirin’s adaptation of Palestinian author-journalist Sayed Kashua’s novel is a
gentle but pointed satire that swept the Israeli Academy Awards. (Israel, 2022, 101min., In Arabic &
Hebrew with English subtitles, NR | Dir. Eran Kolirin)
