Free at last! Alice and Peter are celebrating their retirement – and with it, a new phase in their lives. But when Alice’s best friend dies unexpectedly, Alice makes a shocking discovery: Magalie had a secret affair in France. Meanwhile, Magalie’s death throws Peter into an existential crisis: he becomes a health fanatic to the chagrin of bon-vivant Alice. The final straw comes when Peter invites Magalie’s widowed husband Heinz to join them on the cruise that Alice had hoped would breathe new life into their marriage. On the high seas, Peter only spends time with Heinz. Disappointed and hurt, Alice decides not to return to the ship during a shore excursion in Marseille. Boasting a clever script by Petra Volpe (The Divine Order) that allows for individual solutions rather than conventional ones, and directed with comic panache by Barbara Kulcsar, Golden Years has been the most successful Swiss film since the beginning of the pandemic. –Alissa Simon
