In a “not-so-distant future”, all kids have humanoid robot assistants. Some have higher levels of parental control. And some are definitely cooler than others, but mostly because they are the latest model. Alberte has an old robot, Robbi, who resembles an overgrown stuffy and is still programmed to tell bedtime stories. Cringe moments with Robbi’s faulty auto-correct are outdone only by Alberte’s hilariously distracted, VR-loving parents in their AI-controlled home. But when a drone drops off a G20 named Konrad on Alberte’s 12th birthday, her life seemingly upgrades overnight. Resembling a live boy, Konrad instantly charges Alberte’s social status. No longer lonely, Alberte and Konrad become regulars at the cool kids’ club. At home, he is the sibling she never had. Is it too good to be true? This Danish family comedy is full of surprises and a refreshing take on how we relate to our world today (and perhaps our future). –Deb Girdwood
