Description

After 25 years, A24 is bringing Darren Aronofsky’s PI (π) back on the big screen & restored in 4K!

Numbers whiz Max Cohen (Sean Gullette) is stunted by psychological delusions of paranoia and debilitating headaches. He lives in a messy Chinatown apartment, where he tinkers with equations and his homemade, super-advanced computer. One day, however, Cohen encounters a mysterious number. Soon after reporting his discovery to his mentor (Mark Margolis) and to a religious friend (Ben Shenkman), he finds himself the target of ill-intentioned Wall Street agents bent on using the number for profit. The film explores themes of obsession, the nature of reality, and the search for meaning.

Aronofsky’s experimental style, characterized by his use of stark black-and-white cinematography, rapid editing, and a haunting score, effectively conveys the protagonist’s descent into madness and obsession. Furthermore, the film’s exploration of complex themes such as the search for meaning, the nature of reality, and the consequences of knowledge, challenges viewers to ponder profound philosophical questions. PI (π), as Aronofsky’s directorial debut, showcases his distinctive and visionary filmmaking style that would go on to distinguish his later works, solidifying its status as a cinematic masterpiece.
