LI Peace and Justice Activists/Advocacy groups invite you to an afternoon commemorating the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (Aug.6, 1945). The afternoon will be highlighted by the screening of a powerful documentary portrait of Setsuko Thurlow, a passionate, 85-year-old survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima who has devoted her life to ridding the world of nuclear weapons. Her moving story is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second-generation survivor, Mitchie Takeuchi.

Setsuko was miraculously pulled out of a fiery building after the bomb was dropped and unable to save her other 27 classmates who were burned to death alive. That experience shaped her life forever and she endeavored to keep a pledge she made to her friends - that no one should ever again experience the same horrible fate.

The film is a timely exploration of the global dangers of nuclear weapons and provides an insider's perspective as we see Setsuko campaign with ICAN (the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons). The culmination of Setsuko's decades of activism is her acceptance speech at the 2017 Nobel Peace Awards. (2021, 82 min)

*This collaborative effort of cosponsoring LI Peace and Justice Groups is born out of concern and shared interest in the need to expand support and mobilize our Peace efforts and impacts. We seek to: raise awareness of the current situation related to the dire effects of the existing U.S. nuclear arsenal and weapons modernization policies, the escalation of threats and obscene expense of futile nuclear ‘deterrence’ to resolve conflicts which could be put toward improvement of human and environmental conditions. We are driven by the urgency and risks of nuclear annihilation and desire to reach and support the next generations toward a more peaceful, environmentally sound global coexistence.
