Armed with low tech gear and high minded notions that penguin populations hold the key to human survival, Ron Naveen lays bare his 30 year love affair with the world's most pristine scientific laboratory: Antarctica. Famed as a place that wants you dead, this film follows a rag tag team of field biologists to some of the harshest corners of the planet, where they track the impact of climate change and ocean health by counting penguin populations. From the tip of Argentina to the ominous Deception Island, The Penguin Counters is a treacherous, heart warming journey by a 21st century Dr. Doliitle who dreams of conserving this stunning but fragile region for future generations.

The Presentation
John Carlson is the Sage-Grouse Implementation Lead for Montana/Dakotas Bureau of Land Management in Billings, MT. He was formerly a Wildlife Biologist with the BLM in Glasgow, MT and the Zoology Program Manager at the Montana Natural Heritage Program in Helena. He obtained his BA in Zoology from the University of Montana and MS in Zoology and Physiology from the University of Wyoming. He was born and raised in northeastern Montana and has had a strong interest in wildlife in general and birds specifically for as long as he can remember. He has conducted research on a wide variety of animal species from one end of the world to another, including penguin research in the Antarctic and seabirds in the Bering Sea and northern Baffin Bay. His penguin research included a stint at Palmer Station and at a small research hut called Copa on the shores of Admiralty Bay on King George Island as well as a few seasons as a penguin counter with the Oceanites, a nonprofit environmental, scientific, and educational organization. Closer to home he has investigated a number of wildlife species including Greater Sage-Grouse, Harlequin Ducks, Black-Footed Ferrets, Boreal Owls, grassland birds, and bats.
