Celebrate 40 years of Kubrickian terror with a new 4K restoration of The Shining. Stanley Kubrick’s adaption of Stephen King’s novel takes the audience into the mindset of extreme isolation through a supernatural realm. Jack Torrence (a maniacally perfect Jack Nicholson) becomes the caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel during the off season write his next novel in peace. Warned of the previous caretaker’s psychotic meltdown, Jack takes his wife (Shelley Duvall), son (Danny Lloyd), and the son’s “imaginary” friend Tony on the trip. What begins as a relaxing stay in an idyllic setting turns into a horrorshow courtesy of the hotel’s gruesome past that takes the family on a nightmarish thrill ride in the Pacific Northwest. When released, Jane Maslin from The New York Times said, “Kubrick brings a special dimension to The Shining, a breadth and extravagance no recent film has rivaled. His film becomes as remarkable for its scale as for the suspense it generates, and all the more fascinating for setting grand aspirations.”
