With just a decade since its release, No Country for Old Men still stands as one of the best works in the Coen Brothers’ extensive filmography. It juggles a slew of hefty themes, including fate, greed, corruption, and the changing times, all heightened by its darkly comic tone. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) sets off a violent chain reaction after absconding with two million dollars in cash he discovered at the bloody site of a drug deal gone bad. Unbeknownst to him, creepy, psychopathic hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem, who won an Oscar for his chilling performance while also sporting a crude bowl haircut) sets off in pursuit while a disillusioned Sherriff (Tommy Lee Jones) struggles to contain the rapidly escalating violence consuming his once peaceful town. In addition to Bardem’s Oscar, the film won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay – all testaments to the power of this neo-Western.
