With the entire British army stranded in France, Winston Churchill is urgently named to the position of Prime Minister against the wishes of several Parliament members. As the threat of invasion by Hitler’s forces looms and 300,000 soldiers cornered in Dunkirk, Churchill must maneuver his own party’s politicking and make the ultimate decision: negotiate a peace treaty with Nazi Germany and save the British people at a terrible cost or fight on against incredible odds. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) deftly navigates history to tell a thrilling account inspired by the true story of Churchill’s first weeks in office during the early days of the Second World War in Darkest Hour. The film won two Oscars, including Best Actor for Gary Oldman, who finally nabbed the statuette after a prolific 32-year career.
