A British schoolteacher and recent widow (Deborah Kerr) is sent to Siam in 1862 to instruct the royal children. But she immediately clashes with their father, the king (Yul Brynner). Her modern, Western ways don't sit well with the ruler, but over time he slowly gains respect for her willingness to stand up to him. Eventually that respect deepens into love. The lavish film version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical comes replete with evergreen gems such as "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Hello Young Lovers," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance?" The King and I won five Oscars (Actor, Music Score, Costume Design, Art Direction & Set Decoration and Sound) and was nominated for four more (Picture, Director, Actress and Cinematography)..
