Almost a decade before superhero films swept Hollywood, director M. Night Shyamalan deconstructed the genre with his turn of the millennium feature Unbreakable. Security guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis) emerges unscathed and as the sole survivor of a devastating train crash. Confused and uncertain of his purpose, Dunn is visited by eccentric comic-book art dealer Elijah Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), whose brittle bones match his name, and offers an explanation straight out of comic book lore. Though met with tepid reviews in 2000, Unbreakable now stands as one of Shyamalan’s best films and a shining example of how superhero movies can be much more than popcorn fodder.
