The accidental mix-up of four plaid overnight bags leads to a series of increasingly wild and wacky situations in Peter Bogdanovich’s spot-on revival of the screwball comedy genre. Critics draw comparisons with Howard Hawks’ Bringing Up Babymainly because Barbra Streisand is a shoo-in for Kate Hepburn’s madcap troublemaker in the earlier film and Ryan O’Neal’s Howard Bannister (“as in sliding down the”) is a direct descendant of Cary Grant’s addled paleontologist. Credit hotshot young turk Bogdanovich’s direction; an all-star cast of supporting players; a prize-winning screenplay penned by Buck Henry, Robert Benton, and David Newman; the razor-sharp timing of Verna Fields’ editing, and crisp San Francisco location lensing by the great Laszlo Kovacs ... and you have a timeless comic gem in its own right.

The Great Buster, a new and revealing documentary by Peter Bogdanovich about comic genius Buster Keaton plays CGAC 11/30 through 12/6.
