Great films are not made; they happen. Case in point, The Last Resort, an exquisitely filmed chronicle of early Miami Beach, from the time it became a tourist destination after the Second World War and a subsequent home to Jewish retirees and Holocaust survivors from the North, to its dismantling in the turbulent 80s - before the Art Deco renaissance and its resurgence as Paradise Found for hipsters. Credit co-directors Dennis Scholl and Kareem Tabsch that The Last Resort unfolds as so much more. It’s a detective story that delves into the death of one of Miami Beach’s chroniclers, photographer Andy Sweet. And it’s a double love story. That of Gary Monroe for Sweet, with whom he embarked on a 10-year photojournalistic project that is the basis of the film. And that of Scholl and Tabsch for the place they call home. Featuring eloquent testimony from South Florida luminaries Edna Buchanan, Mitchell Kaplan and Kelly Reichardt, The Last Resort is the non-fiction side of Moonlight, a heartfelt ode to a time and place hidden in plain sight.
