It’s hard to get more indie than Kevin Smith’s debut film Clerks, made on a $27,575 budget and mainly funded by 10 credit cards Smith had to his name and the extensive comic book collection he sold. Thanks to his ingenuity and aptitude for telling a story about regular Joes, what resulted is one of the funniest, most charming, and quotable films of the 90’s indie boom. Dante (Brian O’Halloran), already living a miserable life, reaches a new low when he’s called into work on his day off and has to put up with shoplifters, wakes, break-ups, and debates about independent contractors working on the Death Star. 25 years later, Smith’s debut is as fresh ever.
