Writer-director Bi Gan’s immersive art-house sensation broke box office records in China. Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a noir-tinged film about a lonely man’s quest to find the woman he loved and has been unable to forget, told in two parts: the first an achronological detective story, the second a nocturnal dream. The director has created a film like nothing you’ve seen before, especially in the second half’s hour-long, gravity-defying 3D shot, which plunges its protagonist - and us - through a labyrinthine cityscape. “Midnight movies are no longer the attraction they were in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s,” writes The New York Times’ Glenn Kenny. “This sometimes seems like a shame. Long Day’s Journey Into Night would make exemplary late-night communal viewing ... . Watching it feels like dreaming with your eyes open.”
