The White Crow hints at the artistry of its legendary star. This striking new documentary by BAFTA nominees Jacqui and David Morris goes further, including previously unseen dance footage choreographed by dance greats Martha Graham, Paul Taylor and Murray Lewis. Newly created work by Royal Ballet alumnus Russell Maliphant, with an original score by Alex Baranowski, dramatizes scenes from the dancer’s life. Nureyev’s partnership with the great British prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn followed his epochal defection to the West. Footage of them performing Romeo and Juliet and Giselle are among the highlights of the film. Richard Avedon’s dazzling photography of the dancer in his prime bears witness to the finest male ballet dancer to ever grace the stage. Says biographer Elizabeth Kaye: “He was Mick Jagger before Mick Jagger, the most beautiful man you could ever imagine.”
