The 1970s and early ‘80s in Argentina were the time of the military dictatorship, the “Dirty War,” the disappeared. Benjamín Naishtat’s hypnotic drama follows a successful lawyer (Dario Grandinetti) whose picture-perfect life begins to unravel when a private detective comes to his seemingly quiet small town and starts asking questions. A spellbinding, slow-burn mood of foreboding and impending doom builds through a carefully constructed narrative. If Rojo bears elements of a thriller, it is only to service a devastating dissection of the times. The film was rewarded with the Best Director, Best Actor and Best Cinematography prizes at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
