"Tongues Untied is both a documentary and a work of poetry." - Cineaste Magazine

Marlon Riggs, with assistance from other gay black men, especially poet Essex Hemphill, celebrates black men loving black men as a revolutionary act. Poetry, music, dance, and oral history are used to present voices, tongues untied, to tell of this often muted existence.
