CGAC and Miami Jewish Film Festival celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with a screening of the 4K restoration featuring an original score composed and performed live by Richard Vergez.

In 1920, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history with an eerie plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. This 4K restoration was scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive.

Richard Vergez is a Cuban-American visual/sound artist who currently works and resides in South Florida. Sonically, he explores the outer limits of sound through the use and misuse of magnetic tape, found sounds and analogue synthesis. Previous works include an original score for 1922’s Nosferatu performed live at Gables Cinema in 2016.
