"Varda fills her frames with riots of nature and color, like Bonnard paintings come to life, and with an erotic intimacy to match, choreographing physical passion with unabashed but formally controlled delight." - New Yorker

"Varda has made a masterwork of tone, creating neither a comedy nor a drama, but something strangely other." - Jamie Rich, Criterion Confessions

"The food, the warmth, the smiles, the pervasive unspoken affection and satisfaction that everyone feels... all brightly rendered in the most luminous Technicolor hues, with an impeccable Mozart soundtrack to top it all off--a paradisiacal tranquility, symbolized in the image of a delightful fluttering sunflower, hovers over these scenes that summon up whatever memories we may have of such idyllic moments in our own lives, or still aspire to if there's any slim possibility that they may yet be recreated." - David Blakesless, Criterion Reflections

Though married to the good-natured, beautiful Therese, young husband and father Francois finds himself falling unquestioningly into an affair with an attractive postal worker. One of Agnes Varda’s most provocative films, Le Bonheur examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the ideas of fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world.
