"Munyurangabo may be a simple film with a straightforward message, but the details and conflicts Chung captures give it a reality that cannot be denied." - Detroit News

"The finished film, which was completed in about 11 days, has the tidiness and optimism of a fable. But it showcases certain hard facts of life in a war-torn country whose scars have yet to heal." - Boston Globe

"Chung went and made a film in Rwanda because it was possible and because he cared and that's as good a reason as you can find to make a movie." - MUBI

After stealing a machete from a market in Kigali, Munyurangabo and his friend, Sangwa, leave the city on a journey tied to their pasts. Munyurangabo wants justice for his parents killed in the genocide and Sangwa wants to visit the home he deserted years ago. Though they plan to visit Sangwa's home for just a few hours, the boys stay there for several days. An intense and inspiring portrait of youth in Rwanda, Munyurangabo features Poet Laureate Edouard Uwayo delivering a moving poem about his healing country.

Munyurangabo is presented as part of the Bijou Film Board's Horizons series, focused on showcasing works of international cinema. Message Bijou on social media or send an email to recieve your free student watch code!
