"This film shows Black women as the strong and capable people we are, and that's something that needs to be seen, not just now, but all the time." —Film Pulse

"A joyful observation of Black lives, timely in this moment of global protest against racial injustice." —Sight and Sound

A poignant story of deferred dreams and a mother's love, Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), who pushes her daughter to compete in the titular African-American pagent that she herself won back in 2004. So intent on having her daughter fulfill the promise that she feels went unrealized in her own life, Turquoise loses sight of the fact that her child might have different goals. Miss Juneteenth is the touching feature film debut of director Channing Godfrey Peoples, and presents one of the most believable on screen mother-daughter relationships in years. Presented by FilmScene, Black Voices Project, City of Iowa City, United Action for Youth, Jones Academy & Dream City as part of a community wide Juneteenth celebration.
