"With an incredible ensemble and an elegant eye, Rebecca Hall's Passing is a high-wire act of a debut that tackles its several thorny issues with nary a scratch. "—Robert Daniels, The Playlist
"A beautifully crafted piece of filmmaking and one that heralds an exciting new direction for Hall."—Leila Latif, Little White Lies
"Hall's touch is unerring, deceptively delicate, quiet and immaculate, like that final fall of snow."—Jessica Kiang, Variety
Based on the novel by Nella Larsen, the movie follows two African-American women who can pass as white and choose to live on opposite sides of the color line in 1929 New York. Rebecca Hall's elegant directorial debut stars Tessa Thompson (Sorry to Bother You) as Irene a young upper class wife of a doctor and Ruth Negga (Loving) as Clare, her blond haired high school friend she barely recognizes when she sees her across the grand tearoom of the Drayton Hotel. Through their reconnection we see a delicate exploration of race, gender, sexuality, and class packaged in a psychological thriller whose themes resonate today just as strongly as they did in the Harlem Renaissance.
