499 is Rodrigo Reyes’s stunning doc-narrative hybrid centers around a time-traveling conquistador who experiences first-hand the challenges of the post-colonial world. An achievement that lingers in the imagination. A big screen must.

Saturday, Oct. 30 only -- Filmmaker presentation and Q&A:
For this special screening, Reyes's 499 plays alongside Michael Wolff's short documentary "Hot Lands: Capturing War in the Heart of Mexico." Wolff is a filmmaker and WWU political science professor, who teaches classes on Latin America and comparative politics. "Hot Lands" follows a photojournalist who is documenting the complicated, violent conflict, often hidden from the outside world, a conflict intimately connected not only to a history of drug cartels and failures by the Mexican government, but American markets and policy. Wolff will introduce his film, and then give a presentation, following the screenings of "Hot Lands" and of 499.
