This September, We Really Like Her! co-hosts Danita and Emily welcome you to 1960s Baltimore with a screening of the vibrant, upbeat musical Hairspray (2007), which was partially filmed down the street from the Revue!
Adapted from the hit 2002 Broadway show, which itself was adapted from John Waters’ original 1988 film, Hairspray follows teen Tracy Turnblad (a bubbly Nikki Blonsky) who dreams of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show. Defying societal norms and her overprotective mother (John Travolta), she lands a spot on the show and becomes an overnight sensation. Tracy uses her newfound fame to champion racial integration on the television program, standing against the prevailing prejudices of the era.
Written by Leslie Dixon (the 2003 version of Freaky Friday, Mrs. Doubtfire) and with an all-star cast including Amanda Bynes, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Allison Janney, Christopher Walken, James Marsden, Brittany Snow, Jerry Stiller, Elijah Kelley and Tayla Parx, Hairspray is a toe-tapping, undeniably good time with a positive message.
