The films are hot, but the Revue’s AC will be cranked for the films in this summer’s Heat Wave lineup.
Heat Wave at the Revue Cinema, a lineup of the greatest summer movies ever made, continues with the steamy psychological thriller IN THE CUT with an introduction by Nightmare Alley curator, STEVEN LANDRY!
underbelly of lower Manhattan, Frannie Avery (Meg Ryan), a reserved English professor, becomes obsessed after seeing more than she should of an impassioned couple. After the young woman turns up dead, Frannie is questioned by a homicide detective (Mark Ruffalo) who draws her into a liberating but disturbing erotic encounter. As the body count rises, familiar suspects begin to emerge.
In her most daring and misunderstood film, writer/director Jane Campion (THE PIANO, THE POWER OF THE DOG) transmutes what could have been a standard crime drama into a dreamy, poetic, and atmospheric character study. Thanks to Campion we witness Frannie's introspective and curious nature through a female gaze, the passion and fear of her sexual awakening is mirrored by the steamy and dangerous city around her. The heat and tension is palpable, carnal desire and disturbing violence collide IN THE CUT. (STEVEN LANDRY)
