Moved by the “shower of freedom” of 1960s American counterculture, Agnès Varda took to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968 to shoot Lions Love (. . . and Lies), her first of five “California films.” She transplants New York City to the balmy Hollywood Hills, with Warhol Factory star Viva, Hair co-conspirators James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and filmmaker Shirley Clarke starring in this meta film about a sweaty throuple cohabiting and indulging in each other.
