Spurring controversy upon its release, Punishment
Park remains a searingly relevant reflection on violence and authoritarian
power in the United States. Directed by Peter Watkins, this pseudo-documentary
imagines a near-future America under a state of emergency, where antiwar
protesters and civil rights activists are
detained under the McCarran Act and offered a brutal choice: prison or cross a
scorching desert while hunted by heavily
armed police and National Guard. Intercut with a sham tribunal, Watkins’
harrowing vision remains a chilling, prescient indictment the suppression of
dissent. (USA, UK, 1971, 88 mins,
