The Classic Hammer Horror of a Monstrous Murderess!
In Countess Dracula, Ingrid Pitt is seductive aristocrat Elizabeth Báthory, a 17th century noblewoman accused of killing more than 600 women over decades. An enduring figure of Hungary’s most infamous true crime story, Báthory is the stuff of gruesome legend. She’s been mythologized by both folklore and pop culture as an aging widow turned vampire-like serial killer who’s driven to bathe in the blood of virgin victims in order to regain her youthful allure and beauty. There’s more than a little misogyny in this entertainingly macabre movie about an aging woman in pursuit of youth and libido, told through the lens of 70s B-horror.
Featuring stark but credible transformations from young to old and back again, Hammer horror reimagines the timely legend that gave us seductive Delphine Seyrig in Daughters of Darkness that same year (and more recently, Isabelle Huppert chewing the scenery as The Blood Countess). Like a horror-kitsch Merchant/Ivory, the British production company’s low-budget Gothic shlock is a style unto itself, delivering a period vampire movie with a lush, soapy setting complete with spooky castle set design and period costumes topped with a parade of incredible, frankly ridiculous headwear,
Watch for Lesley-Anne Down in an early role. Presented by Designing the Movies host Nathalie Atkinson.
