50th Anniversary Screening!
A decrepit haunted house horror thriller!
A cash-strapped young couple (Karen Black and Oliver Reed), their son (Canadian child actor Lee Montgomery) and aunt (Bette Davis) escape the stifling city for a secluded country house in this 1976 thriller from Dan Curtis, who created 1960s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and is known for cult hit horror-themed TV movies like The Night Stalker and Trilogy of Terror. The family’s cheap summer rental comes with a catch: they must provide meals to the property owners’ elderly relative, who still lives upstairs. Things turn sinister as each member of the family has strange experiences and personality changes. Is it the psycho biddy upstairs or the mansion itself?
Filmed on location at California’s historic Dunsmuir estate, with costume design by legend Ann Roth (Working Girl, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Birdcage, and The English Patient), it’s the stuff of aspirational lifestyle and real estate nightmares.
Presented with an introduction by series host Nathalie Atkinson.
