Black Belt Cinema's first double-feature!
In the world of martial arts cinema, Indonesia’s traditional combat style ‘silat’ had rarely been seen or heard of before Welsh director Gareth Evans and Iko Iwais’ 2009 debut film Merantau. Their 2011 sophomore effort The Raid — a film set in the deep slums of Jakarta about an elite SWAT team tasked with infiltrating a rundown apartment full of vicious criminals and killers — not only put Indonesian cinema on the map, it redefined the action genre as we know it. After winning the people's choice award at its TIFF premiere, followed by a wildly successful North American run under the title The Raid: Redemption, Gareth Evans & Iko Iwais continued to raise the bar of brutality with the even more gloriously violent sequel The Raid II in 2014. Taking place immediately after the events of the first film, Iko Iwais’ character Rama is sent on an even more hellish path to protect his family and uncover the corrupt members of his police force.
It wasn't long before Hollywood took notice. Iko Iwais and co-star Yaya Ruhian landed cameos in Star Wars: The Force Awakens while Joe Taslim would go on to play Mortal Kombat’s infamous Sub-Zero. In a world of John Wicks and Jason Stathams, you’d be hard pressed to name a better action film than The Raid even 15 years later. To celebrate, Black Belt Cinema will be unleashing these two iconic films BACK to BACK for our first ever double-feature experience.
Please note: Attendees will be charged for both films during checkout as this is a double feature night.
