Do you think Mr. Pipes has come to hurt you?
Airing The War of the Worlds-style on BBC1 on Halloween night, 1992, Ghostwatch stirred considerable panic into its viewing audience: a live broadcast hosted by TV presenter Michael Parkinson investigates a paranormal presence nicknamed “Pipes” in a West London townhouse. Over the course of the night, journalists tour “the most haunted house in Britain,” while locals call into the studio, and a parapsychologist assesses the footage. This controversial poltergeist-spoof is at once a gripping found-footage horror and an example of documentary news aesthetics blurring the limits of fiction and reality. (SAFFRON MAEVE)
