This Halloween season, We Really Like Her! invites you to a screening of serial killer thriller COPYCAT (1995) starring Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver! Co-presented with Pepper's Ghost Productions and their upcoming sapphic horror musical WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES.
Co-written by RAY DONOVAN and SOUTHLAND creator Anne Biderman, COPYCAT follows two brilliant women, criminal psychiatrist Helen (Weaver) and detective M.J. (Hunter), as they team up to hunt down a murderer who is modeling his “work” after infamous killings from the past. Can M.J. keep Helen, who is afraid to leave the house following a traumatic run-in with misogynistic criminal Daryll Lee Cullum (a truly outrageous Harry Connick Jr.), safe while she uses her intimate knowledge of true crime history to crack this rapidly developing case?
Although some of its depictions of the internet may be hilariously dated, COPYCAT was ahead of the curve in many ways that cannot be ignored. Released very shortly after David Fincher’s similarly themed SEVEN, it didn’t get the chance to shine in its time. But it remains a standout of the 90s in its centering of women solving crimes together, with even the groundbreaking SILENCE OF THE LAMBS leaving its leading lady to investigate alone.
Like the aforementioned hits, COPYCAT indirectly recalls some former suspense classics including VERTIGO and WAIT UNTIL DARK. However, as Janet Maslin noted in 1995, “unlike its homicidal wannabe, [it] has a personality of its own."
