DO YOU HEAR TORONTO SING???
This holiday season, Dumpster Raccoon Cinema presents its MOST AMBITIOUS SINGALONG SCREENING EVER – a fully-captioned and open stage presentation of Tom Hooper’s celebrated, feted, beloved and reviled 2012 film LES MISERABLES!!!
THIS DECEMBER: BRING YOUR FRIENDS! BRING YOUR MOMS! BRING YOUR COSTUMES! AND BRING YOUR VOICES!
Prisoner 24601 (aka Jean Valjean aka…a bunch of other names – played by Hugh Jackman) is finally released from prison for his horrible crime of stealing a mouthful of bread – but the implacable Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) is hot on his heels, and when Valjean breaks parole he must spend the next decades hiding his identity even as his generosity and prosperity flourishes (though the grueling workhouse conditions of 19th century France worsen). This titanic clash between justice and grace reaches its head when Valjean is entrusted the care of a child by a dying Fantine (Anne Hathaway) – a child whose blossoming youth and burgeoning romance with dashing (?) youth Eddie Redmayne coincides with all of Paris plunging into riots as the citizenry rises up against the exploitations of the wealthy!
Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with us?
Based on Victor Hugo’s sprawling masterpiece, itself adapted into the legendary critical- and commercial-smash musical, Hooper’s LES MISERABLES garnered praise from critics and eight Oscar nominations – along with Anne Hathaway’s Best Supporting Actress win, and remains a beloved adaptation of the soaring musical. However, the campy cracks that would bedevil Hooper’s next film, CATS, are here beginning to form, as actors cast for their looks not their voice struggle against Hooper’s insistence on live singing, and jarring fish-eye lenses, lurching cameras, and strange close-ups beset (and bejewel!) this strange, appropriate broken production!
Can’t sing??? Neither can half the cast! We won’t let it stop us!!!
Presented as a SINGALONG SCREENING – with open captions and audience participation ENCOURAGED, including our OPEN STAGE!!! If you have a song you want to perform – either as sung-through with your beautiful voice, or as accompanying burlesque, drag, puppet, interpretive dance, etc performance, message host Anthony Oliveira (@meakoopa on Instagram) to book your spot!
With opening live performance, singalong video preshow to warm up your karaoke pipes, cocktails by the Shameful Tiki Room, and digital media on sale from our sponsor Bay Street Video!
Come sing, dance, and cry snotty tears with us!
